Hide labels globally
Please add an option to hide/show labels globally. There's already such option for specific applications in Taskbar Inspector, so why not globally, even if only in advance options?
Why I wan't it? Cuz items behave differently when Windows' option to hide and show labels are used. Basically it displays icons differently. You could add option to show different icons for each item, but I think labels would be easier.
Answer
You're asking for "Hide labels globally" in the title, but that's already possible with the Windows taskbar settings (and you know this). You're actually looking for something else.
You want to hide labels, but have the taskbar show icons that belong to the window, and not icons that belong to the AppId. 7+ Taskbar Tweaker doesn't provide such an option this time. A workaround that works but involves manual work is to manually assign a new AppId to every newly opened window. You can do it with Taskbar Inspector or use the "Drag within/between groups using right mouse button" and do it with the mouse right button drag. Note that hiding labels for a specific AppId with Taskbar Inspector doesn't change the behavior as you say - once you hide the labels, the icon becomes the icon of the AppId. That is unless you also change the AppId, of course.
No, I'm asking for a setting to hide labels globally. The same option that Taskbar Inspector provides, but for all items.
And the icons was only an example, an excuse for adding the option.
The last sentence was rather about changing taskbar items behavior to that from show labels while they actually hidden in Windows' taskbar settings.
Generally I think that option should be there. I don't want to be rude, but I really don't see a reason that option shouldn't be at least in advance options.
OK, then the icons example is unrelated. You provided it as an example to - "items behave differently when Windows' option to hide and show labels are used" - but they don't behave differently.
Why not add such an option:
- It will have to be implemented, i.e. I'll need to spend time on this.
- It complicates the tweaker.
- It adds work for me to do every time a new Windows build is released to keep the tweaker compatible.
- It's already possible to do by using the taskbar properties. You said it's different, but I don't see how.
Why add such an option:
- More options to control from a single location which is the twekaer.
- Can be used with the portable version of the tweaker on others' computers.
- ???
So, as you can see, there are at least several reasons as of why I'm reluctant to add this option.
"Why not add such an option:"
- Like with everything.
- I can't see it could do that. You might at least just add it as an advance option.
- You could at least add it for win7&8 in advanced options.
- You forgot about option to hide labels & combine when full. I bet some people use it. And Icons too.
"Why add such an option:"
- Yes.
- I guess.
- To use freely with any option of the taskbar settings. Like have different icons or combine when full.
- Cuz it doesn't really make sense when an option available for the single apps can't be globally.
"OK, then the icons example is unrelated."
It is related till you'd provide another way to have that. Maybe you could. When the group option is set then the icons are different, but icons are the same (as appID) when option don't group is chosen. Maybe that will give an idea.
The icons are one of the reasons, but mainly cuz it just feels like the tweaker lacks that option. I bet many people would like to have that option.
I can see only one reason to not to do it. Of course very important from your side. But you provided 2 reasons and I 2 reasons, what makes total 4 reasons to do it. Of course at the end only you'd decide if add it or not. I only hope you will.
You forgot about option to hide labels & combine when full.
OK, that's a valid argument.
And Icons too.
I still don't understand what difference is there between using "Combine taskbar buttons" -> "Always, hide labels" regarding icons. Please show me a screenshot that demonstrates the difference.
Please show me a screenshot that demonstrates the difference.
That's when labels hidden.
That's when labels displayed.
I mean, a difference between using "Combine taskbar buttons" -> "Always, hide labels" and setting all of the taskbar items to hide labels using taskbar inspector.
You're right. Ok, so icons are bounded to labels and grouping. Well, one argument goes, but the rest are still valid. I'll make another thread to discuss icons only.
I've added the show_labels
advanced option in v5.6.0.2 beta.
After reading thread https://tweaker.userecho.com/communities/1/topics/273-it-would-be-really-great-to-have-the-possibility-to-always-expand-groups-with-more-than-1-item-and I think there could be two options to hide/show labels, one for single items and the other one for grouped items.
Also an option to hide all labels, even those set manually by TI when taskbar is full. That would require 7+tt to recognize the state when the taskbar is full and Windows is modifying it to fit items.
And another one that would hide labels only for pinned items, but not from the rest items of their group.
I've checked the option one more time and it seems that it works. Sorry about the confusion.
Thanks a lot for adding the option.
