moving pinned programs

Anonymous 9 years ago updated by Michael (Ramen Software) 8 years ago 6

If you have pinned items on the taskbar and "Don't group" set (and no other grouping options set), the location of the taskbar icon will move if you close the window associated with the pinned program.

To reproduce: [pinned Firefox] [pinned app X] on task bar.

1. open Firefox = [Firefox window 1] [pinned app X]

2. open a new window = [Firefox window 1] [pinned app X] [Firefox window 2]

3. close first window = [pinned app X] [Firefox window 2]

4. close second window = [pinned app X] [pinned Firefox]

Of course this doesn't just apply to Firefox.

Thanks!

This is by design. Similar behavior can be seen without the tweaker:

[pinned Firefox] [pinned app X] on task bar.

1. open Firefox = [Firefox window 1] [pinned app X]
2. move Firefox = [pinned app X] [Firefox window 1]

3. close Firefox = [pinned app X] [pinned Firefox]

What behavior would you expect to get in your example?

If you'd like to have the Firefox windows in one location, you might want to use the option "When not grouping, place new items next to the existing ones".

I'd expect the pinned applications to stay in the same order on the bar that they were originally placed. If you have a lot of pinned apps (placed by type of use), you have to search where they moved.

Some suggestions on how to handle it:

A. Don't use the app icon for the window when not grouping; always put window icons at the end after the pinned (inactive) icons.

B. If the first window is closed, put the app icon back in its place.

C. When the last window is closed, put the shortcut back in the original order.

The problem with A is that the icons aren't reused, so the beginning of the bar remains shortcuts. Though I have seen enhancement requests asking for this functionality.

The problem with B is inconsistency. Sometimes the shortcut is there, sometimes not.

C may seem more intuitive to the user, though you'd have to track the pinned order and figure out where a newly-pinned app lives. The icon would still seem to jump around a bit, but it would be back to "normal" in the end.

The complaint from the user (my parents :)) was that they have their Internet stuff first, then picture stuff, then their music stuff and they want the shortcuts to stay in the same order so it's not confusing but still look like Windows 95.

Thank you.

Not a bug

A is already possible with the option "Don't group pinned items".

B and C are not great due to the reasons you've mentioned.

The complaint from the user (my parents :)) was...

Feedback from non-tech-savvy users is sometimes the best kind of feedback :)

I suggest you to try using one of the two options I mentioned:

1. "When not grouping, place new items next to the existing ones".

2. "Don't group pinned items".

Try one of a time. The result will be different. See what your parents like most. Feel free to share the result :)

Closing as a NOT A BUG, because it is not a bug :)

Thanks. I misunderstood what "don't group pinned items" does since I already had "don't group" turned on. That's exactly what we were looking for. Thank you very much

Well I would really LOVE such an option where the icons behave as they did in Windows 7:

The icon of the pinned app would stay there no matter what...

[Firefox 1 open][Pinned App X][Firefox 2 open] -> close Firefox 1

[Firefox 1 closed][Pinned App X][Firefox 2 open] -> close Firefox 2

[Firefox 1 closed][Pinned App X]

I would really love getting this feature back in Windows 10. The only thing close would be "dont group pinned items" but that results in:

[Firefox always closed][Pinned App X][Firefox 1 open][Firefox 2 open]

which just clutters your taskbar really quick since you always have 2 of the icons.

The icons behaved in the same way in Windows 7 as they do in Windows 10.
