Update issue

Anonymous 10 years ago updated by Michael (Ramen Software) 10 years ago 16

Taskbar Tweaker has simply stopped updating. I.E., it notifies of an update, I click install new update and once it's done, it never actually updates. Still the same version. Only updates when I use a proxy. Please kindly look into this issue!

Thanks!

Seems like there's nothing I can do about it.

If you have ideas, add a comment below.

Are you, by chance, from one of the following countries?

China, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Thailand or Taiwan.

The hosting had some issues with these in the past.

I've tried it with a Korean proxy, and the update worked properly for me.

I don't know what might cause your problem.

I am from United Arab Emirates.

I have been using the program since pretty much its beginning. However, this issue has started in the last 4 months or so.

OK, I have a couple of questions.
  • Does the tweaker correctly show the new version number and the changelog?
  • Do you also have issues downloading the setup from the website?
  • Do you have any security software, and if so, have you tried disabling them while updating?

1) Yes.

2) Nope.

3) I have Avast! and MalwareBytes. However, I have had them since long and when TT used to update properly, neither interfered. I shall though, check how the update process perform right now after disabling them.

On a side note, I'd like to thank you for this immediate response to my query. Nearly all the issues I've faced have lead me to expect no response for at least a week and I wouldn't have been surprised if there was never a response. But this issue's response has really cheered me up.

Just tried with disabling them. It had the infinite-scrolling loading bar and then said download failed, check internet connection (nothing wrong with internet). Tried again but same as with AVs enabled - new version just doesn't download.

Put the proxy on (which connects to US servers) and it downloaded.

Also, I have a common issue with Win7, but NO solution that I have tried over the past 2 years have worked. The issue is the famous missing-icons. Sometimes they come, sometimes they don't.

Note: I use a desktop, not a laptop.

Hmm, very interesting.

The tweaker shows the changelog/version, which means it has internet access. But it cannot download the executable, which means it's blocked or something.

On the other hand, you say the installer can be downloaded by a browser, which means it's something specific to the installer (or all exe files?) AND the tweaker.

A mystery.

One more thing I want you to try is to access this link with a browser:

http://rammichael.com/downloads/7tt_setup.exe?nohitcount

This is the actual link the tweaker uses.

If it works with the browser, then the only thing left for me to do is making a debug version of the tweaker with some additional information about the reason of the failure.

Similar to this one?

http://tweaker.userecho.com/topic/163267-icons-loading-in-taskbar-buttons-somteimes-is-incorrect/

Please see my reply there.

Yep, download using that link through a browser has no issues.

Nope, that is not the same issue as mine, where I have a set number of startup icons (in the tray or in the open-up tray) and sometimes they come other times many are missing.

Please try this test build:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/v5hbox3gdhqudwg/7TT_debug_networking_portable.zip?dl=1

It's a portable version of the tweaker, which is labeled as v4.3.9 to allow updates.

Try to launch the update, then check your desktop.

A file named "_DEBUG.LOG" should be created. Post it's contents here.

Here you go:

UpdateCheckCallback (146): 00000000 200
UpdateCallback (487): 00000000 200
UpdateRunInstaller (523): Running "C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\sttF27E\7tt_setup.exe" /S /UPDATE /PORTABLE /D=C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\Rar$EXa0.483\

Sorry, the above was me running it through the archive.

This is the proper one:

UpdateCheckCallback (146): 00000000 200
UpdateCallback (487): 00000000 200
UpdateRunInstaller (523): Running "C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\stt86B2\7tt_setup.exe" /S /UPDATE /PORTABLE /D=C:\Users\username\Desktop\7TT_debug_networking_portable\

OK, so the download succeeded.
The setup was downloaded to:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\stt86B2\7tt_setup.exe

Can you check this file? Is it corrupt?
If you can, please upload it somewhere, e.g. to http://ge.tt/
Well I ran that file and it installed version 4.2.7.

OK, half mystery solved!

Take a look at the following links:

Also, you said that downloading using a browser works fine for you. Does it, or does it download v4.2.7, too?

Ah, that is strange. I'll see if I can contact them. Thanks for the help! :)
